Adventure: DS Fun in the Karoo on a Brand New 800GS Trip Report
This was a quick trip into the Karoo. I just took delivery of my brand new dual sport bike, a BMW 800GS. I have been riding motorcycles since I was sixteen years old, but ones first experience on a machine like this will always have its surprises. Nothing I have done on superbikes before could prepare me for the shear fear than took a hold of me as we drove out of Cape Town on a very wet day. The handling was completely different, the bike steered in a completely different way, it is top-heavy, and unlike superbikes, one is meant to use your upper body weight and legs a lot more. Riding in loose sand was tough. Sparingly my nerves calmed down after a while as I realised this things was not just going to slip out from under me. I did drop the bike a couple of times – luckily at low speed. At least that meant that the halo of a new machine was out of the way. In the end it was a wonderful day of riding. We made it all the way to Kagga Kamma where we had a couple of stiff ones to calm down the nerves. We were back in Cape Town later that evening as the sun was setting. A new relationship has clearly formed with this machine which I hope and trust will last for many years.
Here’s short video made of our day out.
