999Exp: #265– Get a free upgrade on a plane
Yay, so I managed to get my upgrade. As my mentor told me years ago – if only men realised how far a carefully placed compliment can get you in life….
So I had to spend the week in London for business and unfortunately was booked cattle class. I finished my appointments early on the Friday and decided to go to the airport early and give the upgrade thing a go. I have had enough of the shopping and tourists and was feeling like getting out of central London.
I was very glad I did that. With my nicest smile and as mentioned a carefully articulated compliment got me upgraded to a business class seat for the trip back to SA. That’s actually a bigger deal than one may think since I have to a hectic travel schedule over the next two days. I fly into Cape Town on Saturday morning. Then I have to pack for the Sardine Run trip. Later on Saturday I fly to Johannesburg from where the eight hour trip to Port St Johns will commence. To add insult to injury, all guests in the hotel I am staying was woken at 2:30 this morning with a fire alarm and chased out into the streets of London for an hour and a half. There was no fire in the hotel, but a small fire did break out on the KFC next door. I never managed to get back to sleep again after that and was watching Bloomberg TV all night.
The business class seat will allow me at least to lie down and have a proper sleep on the way back. This is a very welcome upgrade and I am very grateful to Sarah pulling the necessary strings to make this happen.
